FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What does LPMT and MT-BC mean?

LPMT stands for "licensed professional music therapist" and is a health care provider license issued by the Oregon Health Authority. The Oregon Health Authority requires that all music therapist be a board-certified music therapist and be a current LPMT to practice music therapy in the state of Oregon.

MT-BC stands for "music therapist-board certified". A music therapist with this credential has completed an approved music therapy degree from a college or university, 1200 hours of clinical hours including a minimum of a 6 month internship, and successfully passed the national board examination authorized by the Certification Board for Music Therapists.

Where are music therapy sessions and music wellness classes located?

Sound Wellness music therapists usually provide sessions off site in client homes, nursing facilities, adult care homes, hospitals, and other off site locations. Due to the pandemic, sessions are currently provided virtually.

Music Wellness classes facilitate individual lessons in client homes (within a reasonable vicinity of Fairview) and group classes at designated off-site locations. Designated off-site locations will be located in Fairview, Oregon and the surrounding Portland metro area.

We have a musician that plays at our facility a couple times a month. Is that the same thing as music therapy?

Not quite. All music therapists are skilled musicians, but are also trained in psychology, biology, movement, music history, music theory, music therapy practice, and clinical practice. Music therapists are clinical healthcare providers and assess individual client goals and use music interventions during the session to address those goals. Music Therapists are trained to meet a client's needs in the moment and are skilled in engaging patients.

Performing/ Entertainment musicians provide entertainment and are not clinically trained to provide music therapy or address clinical goals. They provide a product in the form of music performance to an audience. Performing/ Entertainment musicians may or may not provide client preferred music.

We have a musician that comes by my child's room in the hospital. Is that music therapy?

Music therapy can only be provided by a board-certified music therapist and must also be a licensed professional music therapist in the State of Oregon. Ask the person if they hold the credential and license. If not, ask your treatment team if music therapy is an available service at the hospital and if it may be appropriate to add to your child's treatment plan.

Do I have to be a musician to seek music therapy services?

Not at all! We use music to address non-musical goals. Clients are not required to already know how to play an instrument or read music. If you like music you may benefit from music therapy. A session might include listening to music, creating music with instruments and our voices, lyric analysis, writing a song, legacy projects, and many other interventions. Talk therapy may also be incorporated depending on your needs. Each session (individual or group) are guided by each individual's needs and treatment plan.
